The piece "Am Bach" takes its title from the second movement "Szene am Bach" of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68. It can be considered a Bach chorale expressed in a different language, therefore, it is metaphorical. The choral melody used is "Freu' dich sehr, o meine Seele", of uncertain attribution, either from Claude Goudimel (1562) or Cristoforo Demantius (1640), which was particularly beloved by Bach, who arranged several figured versions of it, some of which can be found in the "St. Matthew Passion". The same choral melody can also be found in Robert Schumann's "Album for the Young" under the simple title "Chorale".
"Am Bach" take life from one of these figured versions and can be described as an explosive Bach chorale (as depicted in Salvador Dalì's painting "Téte raphaélesque explosant, 1973"). The short piece is expanded into a longer duration, during which the relationships between rhythmic values and the temporal proportions remain unchanged, even though they are measured with a non-regular, external, and objective meter (like that of clocks and metronomes) but elastic, conditioned by the piece itself and subjective (that of the listener's perception).

The rules of translation from one piece to another are subjective, and therefore arbitrary, quite complex, and, above all, decided in function of the musical outcome. The starting aesthetic position is far removed from dry theoretical speculations and from cold compositional mechanics that are indifferent to the final result.
The true compositional work here was precisely the invention and choice of these rules. The notes of the long chords that mark the phrases of Am Bach, for example, are chosen from those forming the natural harmonic spectrum (up to the fortieth harmonic) of the notes that make up the original chords of the chorale, including the "detunings" with respect to equal temperament (it is a bad-tempered quartet). Or again: certain embellishment figures (turn notes, passing notes, etc.) correspond strictly to certain figures or performing techniques (glissandi, vibrati of varying amplitude and intensity), and so on.

The formal structure of the original piece exists in its entirety; underground, when listening to Am Bach, runs the Bachian chorale, not acoustically explicit but present and intuitable like a stream hidden in the desert terrain that does not emerge but draws its path with the vegetation on the surface.

Testo Italiano
