Testo Italiano in basso
The Feldland Gameman Sound Installation of Virtual Acoustic Instruments project was conceptualized during a workshop held by ACROE Grenoble in March 1996 at the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie) in Karlsruhe. The version presented here is the one that was realized on multiple audio CDs in random play, which were used for various audio installation occasions.
Listen to a fragment
All of Feldland Gameman's sounds were realised with Genesis, a sound synthesis programme for physical models conceived and implemented by ACROE (Association pour la Création et la Recherche sur les Outils d'Expression) of the Institut Nationale Polytechnique de Grenoble.
While the more usual approach to digital sound synthesis starts from the introduction of sound control data (frequencies, intensities, durations, waveforms), in the synthesis by physical models, made with Genesis, virtual physical objects are created instead, capable of interacting with each other, vibrating and, therefore, producing sounds that can be converted into an audio signal and listened to. Programming - made intuitive by a graphical interface - starts with very few elementary objects: masses, forces of interaction (attraction, repulsion) between the masses, and resistance (friction) to their movement. You can construct objects with any number of masses and bonds between them and give each element variable values in a very wide spectrum (between 0.0000001 and 100.0000).
The disposition of the masses is topographical and the simulation of the physical model is realised in a graphic and an acoustic visualisation; the visual simulation, enormously slowed down, allows one to see the vibration of the 'molecular' structure of the object, the acoustic simulation can amplify into sound the vibration of each mass of the virtual object. If the basic elements are few, the interactions between them, being even simple heterogeneous structures, soon become enormously complex: unpredictable sounds are often generated that require an enormous amount of calculation.
The sounds created for Feldland Gameman are those of an orchestra of elementary instruments (from a single mass to 12 masses, linked together in a string folded back on itself, i.e. in a ring) struck by other free masses falling on them at a constant speed from varying heights and therefore at different times; the initial state of the position of the masses potentially represents the succession in time of the sounds, the score. With each return to the initial state (refrain), certain values are slightly modified; the same 'score' resonates, but on instruments, and therefore with slightly different sounds. This virtual orchestra can be likened, also in terms of the type of sounds expressed, to the Balinese Gamelan; the composition's minimalist structure over very long stretches of time was influenced by the music of the great American composer Morton Feldman.
The title is, evidently, an imperfect anagram of these two names.

Testo Italiano
