Why Do the Bells Ring?

Premise

Bells are acoustic markers of inhabited territory: they can be rung by bell‑ringers (I don’t think there are many left) or by mechanical clockwork systems. They are not timekeeping devices (measurers of time) but rather chronogenic: creators of a conventional time.
Bell towers are structures that visually mark the territory: at their highest point they house the bells, which mark space and time according to patterns with a certain irregularity that is such only in relation to a simple, clear, and shared regularity: one chime for each local hour (coordinates of time and space) and other chimes (sometimes different because rung by other bells) to mark the fractions of the hours.
A first macro‑irregularity may be given by the suspension of activities during the nighttime hours; yet, since it is regularly synchronized with the day‑night cycle, it is an irregularity that is easily predictable, thus not too irregular and not at all surprising.
Other irregularities are more articulated, such as periodic events with wider cycles: Sunday services (weekly cycles) or those linked to religious festivities (monthly and yearly cycles).
Then there are complex, and even surprising, irregularities, due to irregular, extraordinary and/or unforeseeable events: weddings, funerals, fires, earthquakes, or other catastrophic events, natural or otherwise.
A bell concert, as an artistic performative intervention, falls into this latter definition.

So the answer to the question, “Why do the bells ring?” could be: they ring to mark the passing of time – and for you.

Concerto*1 for bells
The sound of bells can only be space-specific (site-specific): the bells, built to be installed in that particular belfry, are part of the place’s acoustic and visual identity and are difficult to move.
A concert composed for those bells to be performed at a given moment is space-time-specific: it takes into account the implicit rhythms (more or less regular, conventional and predictable cycles) and counterpoints them consciously in order to create for the listener, as in any musical composition, tensions, releases, expectations, confirmations, surprises, and reversals.

Like every musical composition, the Concerto for Bells has its own duration and can be repeated – and each time it will be different.
A concert for bells involves three phases

1 - Preliminary phase
Its purpose is to come to know the instrument, the bells identified as usable, and their customary use. It serves to listen to them, become familiar with them and, if necessary, analyse their sounds, as well as to understand their accessibility and the ordinary or extraordinary ways of playing them. It will be useful to know the history of the bells in their local context: belfry, church, settlement.

2 - Compositional phase
This is the truly creative phase: an organisation of the bells’ sounds over time is conceived, adopting – or, if need be, inventing – an operational notation aimed at the interpretation of the Concerto.

3 - Performative phase
This is the actual concert: the indications written by the composer are applied in order to realise the performance.
In relation to the first two phases, the number of performers/interpreters and the possible scheduling of rehearsals will be decided.

Perché suonan le campane?

Premessa
