Il suono come memoria e scrittura dei luoghi
I suoni che propongo in Post Naturale2 sono la memoria di un percorso personale di ricerca - artistico e scientifico - che è iniziato, nel 1996, con un atelier presso lo ZKM di Kahrlsruhe sul programma di sintesi sonora per modelli fisici Genesis, sviluppato dall'ACROE di Grenoble. Dopo quasi vent'anni di collaborazione come compositore, da un anno ho iniziato un Dottorato di ricerca qui a Grenoble, presso il Politecnico, che mi permetterà di organizzare, perfezionare e ripensare i lavori svolti in questi anni.
La prima composizione realizzata in questo percorso è stata La natura delle cose, un pezzo per strumenti a percussione e suoni su quattro canali, presentato nel dicembre 1999 presso il Museo Castello di Rivoli nella splendida sala 18 al II piano. Questa esecuzione era stata preceduta da due studi: Etude n.1 pour La natura delle cose (per timpano in legno con pelle naturale suonato a quattro mani e suoni di sintesi in stereo) presentato,nel 1998, nelle sale espositive di Palazzo Bricherasio di Torino ed Etude n.2 pour La natura delle cose per soli suoni di sintesi su 6 canali e percussioni di legno, metallo e pelle presentato alla Galleria d'arte contemporanea Gazi di Atene.
Il Castello di Rivoli è una residenza Sabauda che presenta stratificazioni architettoniche che vanno dal XI secolo al 1984, anno in cui è stato inaugurato, negli spazi ristrutturati ad hoc, il Museo d'Arte Contemporanea.
Palazzo Bricherasio è un gioiello Barocco nel centro di Torino, egregiamente riattato ad uso spazi espositivi nel 1994 che ha chiuso, tristemente, nel 2009 una attività di mostre di alto profilo.
Gazi è uno bell'esempio di architettura industriale ad Atene : una fabbrica di produzione e stoccaggio gas, per molti anni in anni in disuso, recuperata negli anni '90 a spazio espositivo e performativo.
La tavolozza sonora, i materiali musicali “bruti” dei due Etudes e del brano conclusivo sono gli stessi: sono la “materia secca” che forma la partitura – scritta ed elettronica - dei brani che ripropongo qui, nelle registrazioni originali fatte nei luoghi delle prime esecuzioni: suoni virtuali modellizzati fisicamente e suoni reali di pelli, legni e metalli percossi ritornano “bagnati” dalle risonanze naturali di spazi diversi e ricchi di storia e vissuti da persone (il pubblico in ascolto) rimescolate in tempo reale dallo spazio d'ascolto della Sala della Dogana di Palazzo Ducale di Genova che aggiungerà un altro strato di risonanze e memoria facendo rivivere una storia sonora che racconta un processo creativo e di ricerca.

Genoa, Ducal Palace, Sala Dogana, 10 – 27 April 2014
Henry Hargraves (1979) is a young New Zealander artist, who moved to NY and became a photographer after a successful career as a fashion model. He decided to become the eye beyond the camera and, thank to his great technical skills, started his provocative work of contamination between food and culture. Chiara Casarin, the curator of his exhibit at the Museo della Follia at San Servolo, Venice, that was the opening of his European project in 2013, says that “It consists of a journey through our daily life, where fast relationships and fast feeding witness our fragile emotions and easy consolations…..”.
The exhibit arrives in Genoa after traveling to Treviso, Venezia and Ramagen. The series “No seconds”, in particular, is focused on the last food desires of famous American people condemned to death, and this is the first time that the pictures are shown publicly in a big size. “Frosted Dic Cakes” instead plays with the faces of dictators a game of food and mass culture contamination. www.henryhargraves.com.
Together with the “No seconds” series, the audience participates in the 3D audio installation of the Italian composer and experimental artist Giuseppe Gavazza (Bogliasco Fellow in 2006 and 2011), who is currently studying for a PhD in Cognition and Environment at the Ecole Doctorale Ingenierie pour la Santé' in Grenoble, France.
The sounds that I propose in Post Naturale2 are the memory of a personal path of research - artistic and scientific - that began in 1996 with a workshop at the ZKM in Kahrlsruhe on the sound synthesis programme for physical models Genesis, developed by ACROE in Grenoble. After almost twenty years of working as a composer, a year ago I began a PhD here in Grenoble, at the Polytechnic, which will allow me to organise, perfect and rethink the work carried out over the years.
The first composition I composed as part of this process was La natura delle cose, a piece for percussion instruments and sounds on four channels, presented in December 1999 at the Castello di Rivoli Museum in the splendid room 18 on the second floor. This performance had been preceded by two studies: Etude n.1 pour La natura delle cose (for wooden tympanum with natural leather played by four hands and synthesis sounds in stereo) presented, in 1998, in the exhibition rooms of Palazzo Bricherasio in Turin and Etude n.2 pour La natura delle cose for only synthesis sounds on 6 channels and wood, metal and leather percussion presented at the Gazi Gallery of Contemporary Art in Athens.
Castello di Rivoli is a Savoy residence with architectural stratifications dating from the 11th century to 1984, the year in which the Museum of Contemporary Art was inaugurated in specially renovated spaces.
Palazzo Bricherasio is a Baroque jewel in the centre of Turin, beautifully restored in 1994 for use as an exhibition space, which sadly closed in 2009 after a period of high-profile exhibitions.
Gazi is a fine example of industrial architecture in Athens: a gas production and storage factory, disused for many years, recovered in the 1990s as an exhibition and performance space.
The sound palette, the "brute" musical materials of the two Etudes and the concluding piece are the same: they are the "dry matter" that forms the score - written and electronic - of the pieces that I propose again here, in the original recordings made in the places of the first performances: Physically modelled virtual sounds and real sounds of skins, woods and beaten metals come back "wet" from the natural resonances of different spaces rich in history and experienced by people (the listening audience) remixed in real-time by the listening space of the Sala della Dogana in Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, which will add another layer of resonances and memory, reviving a sound history that tells a creative and research process.
