Testo Italiano in basso

Sciamano, habitually written without any Italian accents, can have two possible meanings depending on the accent: sciàmano (they swarm) and sciamàno (Chaman). It is a track that consists entirely of electronic sounds. The eight-track version was originally created for a performance in an open space. All of the sounds used in the track were synthesised with the GENESIS physical model synthesis programme, resulting in sounds that are simple and often self-resonating structures, each of which is different and characterised by a high degree of chaoticness.

The resulting sounds are chaotic, 'noisy', and for the most part long (many minutes) if not endless. The track uses approximately forty different structures and sounds. The concept of the eight-track track is that of a sampler on these vibrating, living structures in perpetual acoustic motion, a shamanic swarm on which, in the mixing of the live interpretation of the concert, listening windows are opened. The stereo version offered is a picture of one of the possible interpretations.

Shaman, which was presented at the Aix en musique de Aix en Provence festival on 26 June 2003, is my first entirely electronic concert composition. Created for an eight-channel broadcast using only sounds made with the Genesis physical model synthesis programme developed by ACROE in Grenoble exists in a stereo version realised for a performance on the MOTU Acusmonium.

I have selected GENESIS models for my composition. These models are characterized by their simple structure, which typically includes only one or two masses. Additionally, they have at least one LNL (Non-Linear Link), which introduces a high degree of chaoticness into the structure. These structures generate very long, often infinite sounds, as they are self-resonant. I have designed the loudspeakers to act as listening windows, providing access to these "vibrating and living" structures.

Testo Italiano
