testo italiano in basso
" ... If I take away the printed words, of the text here only immaterial thoughts remain, which flutter through the air, rest on the air, are nourished by the air, and return to the air, for all is air in the end".
*1 Chapter I Page 2 (personal translation from Italian)
Making music is nothing more than moving air: it vibrates and then returns to its place. It was this thought that gave rise to Hrabal's sentence - and, of course, the title - and to the idea of making A Loneliness Too Noisy an acoustic, sonorous, musical work.
Hrabal's beautiful short novel is divided into 8 chapters of similar length: I read the whole novel aloud while keeping an eye (and an ear) on a stopwatch, so that the reading of each chapter took the same amount of time: 24 minutes.
The audio recordings of the reading of the 8 chapters were superimposed to form a single 8-voice track of equal length. (...)
Just as in each of Hanta's parallelepipeds of compressed, unreadable printed words, an open page pulsates and lives, so in the dense, compact and incomprehensible block of 8 normalised and superimposed voices, here and there (every minute, like a pendulum marking the 24 hours of the day, but 60 times faster) a voice, a word, a sentence becomes an acoustically open page, barely emerging from the background noise, but only thanks to the movement, the shifting between the two left and right channels of the stereo track.
For a few seconds, oscillating between left and right, a few fragments of spoken words float in the air, becoming witnesses and protagonists, imperceptibly more perceptible; thanks to the movement that brings them to life, perhaps they become comprehensible.
Testo italiano
*1 Capitolo I pag 2
