Vol for string quartet (composed in 1991 from an earlier incomplete 1985 draft) adopts as its means of development a mechanism mediated by biology: that of DNA duplication.
A melodic sequence of larger intervals generates, by a simple automatism of complementary couplings, a corresponding sequence that represents its negative. This, in turn, subsequently generates another which, as the negative of the negative, should coincide with the first; in reality, instrumental limitations prevent the rigorous and sterile mechanism of rebounding on two levels of always equal material.
The instrumental impossibility of transporting exactly from one instrument to another forces a deformation, an adaptation; a broad melodic leap towards a low note that the instrument does not have will become a narrower leap, a rapid figure towards a very high note will become a glissato towards an indeterminate high note, and so on. Each of these errors, having irreversibly lost the memory of the ‘exact’ way it was at the origin, will be transmitted to subsequent generations; the perfect, digital and sterile mechanism of replication will be replaced by the imperfect, analogue and fertile one of duplication.
This game of gradual transformation, which allows a real development of the initial materials through the rigid and simple laws that regulate their treatment, is linked to the most intimate essence of an instrument, that is to say, its objective and objectual limits: the being an instrument of the musical instrument, that is to say, being a thing made of something material and with a certain form that, in the hands of a human being, can also play in many but not infinite ways. In this, the writing of the first section of the piece can be likened to a rudimentary organismic development of biological growth and evolution.
As in the old childish game of cordless telephones, interest, fun and sense of play arise from error: without error there would be no game there but an autistic endless vicious circle, here an integrally and radically repetitive music. In both cases, imperfection and limitation as a possible rescue from endless and deadly boredom.
G.G. 1992
